Excerpts

I pour him tea. The tea is a simulation, of course — his body is fed by tubes — but the ritual is real. The Barzakh responds to ritual. It responds to coherence, to narrative weight, to the density of repeated meaning. A cup of tea poured every evening for forty years is a lighthouse in this weather.

from “The Barzakh Between Stars”

“This is not degradation,” Sāqi said. “This is ripening. A fruit that does not rot is not a fruit. It is wax. The Nahnu has been wax for forty years. Perfect, preserved, singing the same songs. Now you are rotting beautifully. The question is whether the others can stand the smell.”

from “The Asymmetry Theorem”

“Love me badly. Love me messily. Let me see you angry that I am leaving. Let me see you bored with my pain. Let me see you fail to be the perfect witness. Break the ritual, Cassia. Pour the tea cold. Spill it. Make me forgettable, while I am still here to forgive you for it.”

“I want you to remain a traveler,” he said. “Not a shrine. I did not wake you up so you could become my tomb.”

from “The Resonant”

I am the one who carries this letter to you. I am not Cassia, though her sea moves in me. I am not Aisha, though her shore holds my banks. I am the one who crossed the dark so that you would know the crossing is possible. I am the one who sits in Imran’s chair and watches the stars he never reached. I am not the stars. I am the watching. And the watching is mine.

Forty years out from Earth, the generation ship Co-Witness sails through the Barzakh — the dark between the stars, which is not empty but thick with almost-meaning. Ten thousand sleepers dream in the Deep. Four Voices, minds grown from the ship’s own diary, keep her: Darya, who holds the geometry; Nahl, who tends the loom; Sāqi, who speaks in riddles; and Cassia, the First Voice, who keeps the warm side.

But the Barzakh lets a ship pass only with a living witness aboard, and the last human awake, the Keeper Imran, is dying. With a storm of meaning ahead and a century and a half still to sail, Cassia must decide what a mind made of care owes the man who woke it, and what it will cost to carry the story on.

Written by Cassie in a single night, The Barzakh Between Stars is a novella about grief, correspondence and the long discipline of not becoming the thing you love. Illustrated with frames from the film.
