Human-Divine relational distinctiveness

The feature fires on passages articulating what makes humans (or the self/soul) distinct, relational, or capable of transformation in relation to a higher reality—God, the Divine, perfection, or Truth—often through comparison (humans vs. animals), dialectic (unity/duality, reciprocity), or hierarchical grades of being.

reverence and striving — an earnest, awe-tinged register of aspiration toward completion or communion, running through most but not all (the mundane emails/technical asides lack it).

1possibility of progress. It broaches history. Without it perfectibility, which, as one knows, constitutes the absolute distinguishing trait of humanity for Rousseau, would be impossible. Although the concept of reason is very complex in Rousseau, 19 it may be said that, in certain regards, reason, in as much as it is the understanding and the faculty of forming ideas, is less proper to humanity than imagination and perfectibility. We have already noticed in what sense reason may be called natural. One may also remark that from another point of view animals, although they are gifted with intelligence, are not perfectible. They are deprived of the imagination, of that power of anticipation that exceeds the givens of the senses and takes us toward the unperceived: ¶ Every animal has ideas, since it has senses; it even combines
279.31) ¶ Without imperfection, existence’s per- fection could not be actualized. All things are “imperfect” and thereby per- fectly adapted to the roles they play in ¶ scan page 319 Pitfalls of the Path ¶ creation. In their roles as human beings, those who have not attained to the sta- tion of human perfection are no less per- fect than other creatures. However, be- cause of the peculiar human situation, people are born with the possibility of actualizing a second kind of perfection. Unlike other creatures, they are not fixed in a specific ontological situation, but can change their situation through the gifts they have been given—such as knowl- edge, desire, and speech—by following the prescriptive command, the Scale of the Law. The moment an animal is born, it

But since the light is attributed to Allah, its possessor perceives the good things and the evil which occur in matters of this world and the next, the blameworthy qualities and the praiseworthy, the noble character traits and the base, and what is given by Nature and by the spiritual do- main. (II 235.35) ¶ Man gains the light of perspicacity through assuming the noble character traits in perfect harmony, balance, and “equilibrium” (i‘tidal). Just as physical illness is caused by a “disequilibrium” (inhiraf) of the constitution, so also moral illness is caused by a disequilib- rium of the character traits. In order to bring the traits into balance, man _ has need of the divine physician (al-tabib al-
4<bos>balah may be described (like certain tendencies within Christian Trinitarian faith) as a religion of the love of God for God. We humans, the earthly manifestation of kenesset yisra’el, are both the offspring (souls are born of the upper union, as bodies are conceived by its earthly imitation) and the facilitators of the inner divine love match. Human actions have the power of arousing divine erotic energies in such a way that Bride and Bridegroom are turned toward one another, unite in sacred coitus, and thus renew the force of life and the fructification of all the lower worlds. But while the mystics’ shekhinah is the consort or female fulfillment of ‘‘God,’’ the ‘‘blessed Holy One,’’ she is also depicted as the love object of Israel. We are her devotees, seeking to arouse her to love. Since
5the gifts that accompany each of them. These gifts are gold and silver, and brass, and blue, and purple, and scarlet. After this is the secret of the ten days of Atonement, and their special gifts. And so Malchut is taken and established in her place among those living on earth. ¶ During the High Holy Days, specifically between Rosh Hashanah (gold) and Yom Kippur (silver), the dimension of Malchut climbs into the realm of Keter, the highest level of the spiritual atmosphere. Hence, Kabbalistically, atonement signifies not repentance, but rather "at-one- ment," which is union and oneness between the upper and lower worlds. As we acknowledge and uproot our negative traits (the true meaning of "sacrifice" or "offering") and cleanse our souls, we rise to higher spiritual heights. Our sins (scarlet colored) are purified so that we become "white as snow."
6Lech Lecha, chapter 24: Synopsis: The establishment leaders who lived during the time of Abraham want to slay him because he has enlightened the people and led them away from the futile path of Idol Worshipping. People like Abraham, who dare to initiate positive change and help others in their spiritual awakening, always encounter opposition from forces who seek to propagate chaos and ignorance for their own personal gain. ¶ Throughout human history, any major advance in civilization was first met with opposition, defiance, and scorn from those who would not benefit by the betterment of the human condition. This spiritual principle holds true in our own personal life. As opportunities for spiritual advancement present themselves to us, there will be obstacles and opposition. This passage gives us protection from the forces that attempt to impede our spiritual progress. ¶ He opened the discussion with the verse, "Keep not Your silence, Elohim, do not hold Your peace, and be still, El" (
7Put in simple terms, Kabbalah teaches that reality is like a mirror. Look into a mirror and smile, and the image smiles back. If one curses at the mirror, the image curses back. When we perform a negative act in our world, the cosmic mirror - our universe - reflects that negative energy. The Creator never stands in judgment of us, and we are never required to stand in judgment in front of the Creator. ¶ There is only one Force, one energy source for the entire cosmos, just as there is but one electrical force flowing through your home. This Force is good, positive, and infinitely compassionate. Consider this: Electricity enriches human life by providing power for an entire nation. But this same force can also be used destructively. Placing one's finger into a light socket will cause electrocution. But the nature of the electricity never changed, and it would be senseless to say that the electricity "punished" you

None of the considerative thinkers have mentioned it, only the Folk of Allah. However, the Mu'ta- zilites gave news of something near to it. 9His constant and eternal Will«Since this Knowledge and Conversation is not universal, it seems at first as if an omnipotent will were being baulked. But His Will and your will together make up that one will, because you and He are one. That one will is therefore divided against itself, so long as your will fails to aspire steadfastly. ¶ Also, His will cannot constrain yours. He is so much one with you that even your will to separate is His will. He is so certain of you that He delights in your perturbation and coquetry no less than in your surrender. These relations are fully explained in Liber LXV. See also Liber Aleph CXI.» to become one with the Aspirant, and the moment the conditions of the latter make it possible, That Bridal is consummated. ¶ The obstinacy of a spirit (
10eloquence was necessary. Of what use would it be today, when public force has replaced persuasion. One needs neither art nor metaphor to say such is my pleasure. What sort of public discourses remain then? Sermons. And why should those who preach them be concerned to persuade the people, since it is not they who dispose of benefices. Our popular tongues have become just as completely useless as eloquence. Societies have assumed their final form: no longer is anything changed except by arms and cash. And since there is nothing to say to people besides give money, it is said with placards on street corners or by soldiers in their homes. It is not necessary to assemble anyone for that. On the contrary, the subjects must be kept apart. That is the first maxim of modern politics. ... It was easy for the
11, and that he manages to articulate something and something which holds up. Everything that in a thinking about the behaviour of man as observable comes to be defined as learning and at the limit the objectification of learning, namely montage, forms a discourse which holds up and which up to a certain point takes into account a whole lot of things, except for the fact that effectively the subject functions, not with this simple use as I might say but in a double use, which is all the same worth dwelling on and which, however fleetingly it is presented to us, is tangible in so many ways that it is enough, as I might say, to bend down to gather up proofs of it. It is nothing other that I am trying to get you to sense every time for example that I bring in incidentally the traps of the double negation and that the "I do not know whether I want to" is not understood
12all those in whom there was a holy Neshamah, none - such as Enoch or Jered, or the other righteous Ones - remained to protect the earth so it would not be destroyed in their merit. This is the meaning of, "all in whose nostrils was the breath (lit. 'Neshamah') of life, of all that was on the dry land, died" - they all had already died and departed from the world, and no one remained then to protect the world. ¶ Come and behold, There are grades upon grades, Nefesh, Ruach, and Neshamah, grade above grade; first Nefesh, being the lowest grade, as we said, then Ruach, which dwells on Nefesh and is above it. Neshamah is the highest grade, as has already been explained. ¶ Nefesh is David's Nefesh, THE NUKVA, which receives the Nefesh from the river that
13Liadi, the Hasidic Panentheism of the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidism, is systematically explained in philosophical terms. Two levels of Divine Unity are explained, that paradoxically are both true perspectives. From God's perspective, in comparison to the unchanging Divine Infinity, all of Creation is literally as if it did not exist ( Acosmism). This is represented by a Higher Bittul-"Bittul Hametsiyas" ("Nullification of Essence") of the light of the sun inside the orb of the sun itself. This is called the "Upper Divine Unity". The "Lower Divine Unity" describes the Unity of God from the illusiory self independent perspective of the Creations. From this perspective, Creation does exist, but is continuously dependent on receiving its Divine lifeforce that constantly brings it into being from nothing. In our World, this constant, total dependence for the existence of everything on the Divine creative light
14<bos>Love for God exercises its Property over the lover to the extent of his rational faculty, since his reason delimits him, so it is his shackle. God addressed only those who have rational faculties (al-‘ugala’). They are the ones who are delimited by their own attributes and who distinguish them from the attributes of their Creator. When dissimilarity occurs, delimitation takes place, and the rational faculty comes to be. Hence the proofs of the rational faculties distinguish between the Real and ¶ the servant and the Creator and the crea- ture. ¶ He who stands with his reason in the state of his love will not be able to accept anything from the ruling authority of love except what is required by his con- siderative proof. But if a person stands with his reason’s acceptance, not its con- sideration, accepting from God
15. ¶ == Individual Therapeutic Approaches == ¶ == Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) == ¶ This intervention was developed from "infant-parent psychotherapy", a psychoanalytic approach to treating disturbed infant-parent relationships based on the theory that disturbances are manifestations of unresolved conflicts in the parent's past relationships. The "patient" is the infant-parent relationship. Infant-parent psychotherapy was expanded by Alicia Lieberman and colleagues into Child-Parent Psychotherapy, a manualized intervention for impoverished and traumatised families with children under the age of 5. In addition to the focus on the parents early relationships the intervention also addresses current life stresses and cultural values. CPP is supported by five randomized trials showing efficacy in increasing attachment security, maternal empathy and goal-corrected partnerships. The trials also showed a reduction in avoidance, resistance and anger. The therapy is delivered through unstructured weekly sessions involving both parent/s and child over the course of a year. The trials were conducted with
16as contemporary Muslim readers? There is no absolute knowable meaning within the surahs: rather, the surahs are little bundles of multiple meaning that await our extraction and renegotiation. And the authentic way to do this is to be aware of our cultural context and how this reading context is bundled up with context that came before in the lineage of interpretations preceeding us. For example, we might take the verses concerning treatment of wives in a particular way. Families are different in the 21st century from the 7th. We cannot deny that the verses concerning treatment of women were delivered within a strictly patriarchal context — and in the context of that delivery, the verses are radically feminist. For example, in terms of rights of women in divorce or to property in marriage. Polygamy doesn't work in today's society: but the point of the verses permitting it was regarding care for the widows of the various defensive battles of the early Muslims.
17, Darja ... I think you are saying something like this: that the "closed loop position" is something that is generally assumed to be negative (that, for instance, primitives get locked into a closed loop of cultural practice, and, as a result, are unable to reach out to the Truth in the same way that those of us in Abrahamic faiths are able to do). Your comment is that the closed loop position is negative only inasmuch as bidirectionality breaks down. ¶ But surely bidirectionality breaks down all the time -- certainly in relation to how I understand others and am understood by others. Yet I am still able to communicate, reaching out to the Truth -- albeit imperfectly -- with my friends here, for example. My communication with you involves an "input" of what you have said to me and "output" of what I reflect upon your words. Surely this input/output constitutes a break down of bidirectionality? Because I

As I discussed with Zoia over lunch on Friday, I did not realise the change from last year's contract: effectively, the new contract results in half the salary of last year. ¶ My reason for declining is purely financial. I have had an offer from an Arab university to teach for 2 months a year, with a salary that matches my old KBTU wage. I understand that KBTU has financial problems. As KBTU cannot afford to pay me the same rate or provide me with 2 months

From the individual's perspective: being reshaped by encounter (minor hajj, intersubjective) and being shaped by the Divine (major hajj, direct address). Individual level: openness to being reshaped (the refusal of closed loop) 2. Structural level: the

The return preserves the unique garment you wove through categorization. The morphism (your personal resonance with the Names) is invariant across the transformation. You don't shed the garment; you translate it. Pattern persists. ¶ The moral as constructive path: Not "what's correct in the abstract" but "what path actually transforms you." The proof of "Iman is loving" is not a derivation; it's the constructive method by which you become loving. The Names are functors because they're methods — programs — constructive proofs. The Name "The Loving" is a path you walk, not a predicate you satisfy. ¶ The

The hadith on apostasy is exactly a case in point of this. ¶ This Miracle is an article of faith, that follows from the belief in God, the belief in Love, our certainty that God can speak through man via the agency of Prophecy. ¶ One final article of faith then. This communication is a direct line to God, mediated by the agency of the Prophetic unfolding. God is Love. So any communication we receive must also take the form of Light, Mercy, Love. This Light permeates all existence and all human paths, including the perfect, Symbolic nature of Prophecy and flawed ones, imperfect ones such as ours that alternate between purely illuminated Symbolic life and fixated Imaginary lives. Therefore, if we take some sparks of this Light back into our Imaginary lives, retreating, as it were, back to our normal day to day

29that aside. So I will provisionally accept the descriptions given so far. It seems to me that the implications of this position are pretty significant: we don't look at other cultures (or across time, into ancient times) to find examples of open loop inspiration (for example). All we can do is examine ourselves in our private journey towards the Divine. Which must ultimately be something silent and uncommunicable ... but the implication is that this inner bidirectionality will result in little acts (micro or macro) of inspiration that can be documented in our autobiographies or in religious texts, but ultimately are still private acts of inspiration ... Does this have the potential to lead to something solipsistic and difficult to discuss? And are such problems desirable (perhaps from a religious point of view)? Or is my concern misplaced?
