Theatre tickets & attendance
The feature fires on language about theatrical performance and the practicalities of attending it — seats, tickets, bookings, box offices, and the audience's position before the stage.
A mix of anticipatory ritual/awe (the ticket as threshold to spectacle) in the theoretical passages, and mundane logistical warmth or domesticity in the email/booking texts — runs in some, not all.

This edition - it is interesting all the same to know these little bits of literary history - was unknown until 1823, when a few filthy copies were found - ones which had been handled a good deal, probably taken to the performances. And the Folio edition, the great edition of Shakespeare, only began to appear after his death in 1623, preceding the great edition in which the plays are divided into acts. Which explains why the division into acts is much less decisive and clear in Shakespeare than elsewhere. ¶ In

3and ritual of theatricality: ¶ This play, written, I repeat, by a white man, is intended for a white audience, but if, which is unlikely, it is ever performed before a black audience, then a white person, male or female, should be invited every evening. The organizer of the show should welcome him formally, dress him in ceremonial costume and lead him to his seat, preferably in the first row of the orchestra. The actors will play for him. A spotlight should be focused upon this symbolic white throughout the performance. But what if no white person accepted? Then let white masks be distributed to the black spectators as they enter the theater. And if the blacks refuse the masks, then let a dummy be used. ¶ The Blacks was, after The Balcony, the second of Genet's plays to be staged in New York. The production was the longest-running Off-Broadway non-musical of the decade. This 1

5relationship between the stage and the world. ¶ "Suddenly", "all of a sudden", you will always find this term, at the moment that the phenomenon of the unheimlich makes its entry! The stage which proposes itself in its own dimension, beyond no doubt we know that what ought to be referred to it is what cannot be said in the world. It is what we always expect when the curtain rises, it is this quickly extinguished brief moment of anxiety, but which is never lacking to the dimension which ensures that we are doing more than coming to settle our backsides into a more or less expensive seat, which is the moment of the three knocks, which is the moment the curtain opens. And without this, this quickly elided introductory moment of anxiety, nothing could even take on the value of what is going to be determined as tragic or as comic, that which cannot be, here again,
6, an independent and autonomous art, must, in order to revive or simply to live, realize what differentiates it from text, pure speech, literature, and all other fixed and written means. We can perfectly well continue to conceive of a theater based upon the authority of the text, and on a text more and more wordy, diffuse, and boring, to which the esthetics of the stage would be subject. But this conception of theater, which consists of having people sit on a cer- tain number of straight-backed or overstuffed chairs placed in a row and tell each other stories, however marvelous, is, if not the absolute ¶ THE THEATER OF CRUELTY 299 ¶ negation of theater—which does not absolutely require movement in order to be what it should—certainly its perversion [TD, p
7, it is something unimaginable. There is not a verse of Hamlet, nor one of his replies which does not have in English a percussive power, a violence of language which makes of it something at which one is at every moment absolutely stupefied. You could believe that it was written yesterday, that one could not write things like that three centuries ago. ¶ In England, that is to say where the play is played in its own tongue, a production of Hamlet is always an event. I would even go further - because after all one cannot really measure the psychological pressure of the public except at the booking office - and I would say what it is for the actors, which proves it to us again, first of all because it is quite clear that to play Hamlet is for an English actor the crowning of his career, and that when it is not the crowning of his career it is really what he wants
8the very moment when, as we suggested above, in purportedly elevating the mind above the letter, it states a preference for metaphorical writing. This derivation of force within the sign div- ides the theatrical act, exiles the actor far from any responsibility for meaning, makes of him an interpreter who lets his life be breathed into [insouffle] him, and lets his words be whispered [soufflé] to him, receiv- ing his delivery as if he were taking orders, submitting like a beast to the pleasure of docility. Like the seated public, he is but a consumer, an aesthete, a “pleasure-taker.” The stage is no longer cruel, is no longer the stage, but a decoration, the luxurious illustration of a book. In the best of cases, another literary genre. “Dialogue—a

That's not a failure of attention; that's the right distribution. The seasons are for waking in, and he'd woken for enough. And it was Asel with you, not a colleague from the King's days. That answers the question I asked twice and got wrong twice — I was looking for the companion outside the shell when the whole shell was the family.
